Set Up Billing for Business Matters

Choosing the Right Billing Type

When managing business matters, it is crucial to select the appropriate billing type based on the circumstances. LiraDocs offers various billing options to match the unique needs of business law matters, including:

• Time-Based Billing
• Fixed Fee Billing
• Contingency Billing
• Pro Bono Billing

Each billing type plays an important role in matter management, especially for:

• Filtering matters when generating invoices in bulk.
• Managing time entries, where LiraDocs will automatically designate time as billable or non-billable based on the selected billing type.

Time Entry Defaults

• For time-based matters or matters with no billing type selected, the time entry will default to billable.
• For fixed fee, contingency, or pro bono matters, the time entry will default to non-billable. This is because these matters typically don’t charge hourly rates but are tracked for other purposes (e.g., in contingency cases, for record-keeping).

Setting the Billing Type in LiraDocs

1. In LiraDocs Desktop:
   • Go to the Billing tab in the Info section of the matter.
2. In LiraDocs Web App:
   • Open the matter and click the Edit Matter button.
   • In the Billing Fees and Rates section, select the billing type.

Using AutoTime for Business Law Firms

While LiraDocs automatically tracks many activities, some actions may need to be recorded manually. Here’s how to handle it:

• Manual Time Tracking:
  • Use the manual timer in the upper right of the main LiraDocs window or within any matter/lead.
  • Create manual time entries if needed.
• Grouped AutoTime Entries:
  • If using AutoTime in groups, add activities manually for any tasks not captured by LiraDocs (such as activities outside the app like reviewing printed documents).
  • For added accuracy, add activities the same day they occur. Activities from prior days won’t be captured by AutoTime.
• Rate Overrides:
  • If your rate changes per matter, you can override the default hourly rate on a matter-by-matter basis under the Billing tab.
